General Information

Welcome to the Pervasive.SQL 2000i Service Pack 4 release.

Note: What's New in Pervasive.SQL 2000i, included in your online
documentation, contains a wealth of information about new features in this
release. You can view this documentation via the Start Menu by selecting
Start | Programs | Pervasive | Pervasive.SQL 2000i | Documentation | Whats
New.

Technical Note: Cache Tuning on Servers

Windows NT and Windows 2000 both implement dynamic file system cache
mechanisms which allow the system to take advantage of free memory to cache
recently accessed data. Microsoft provides several mechanisms which allow
applications and administrators to configure this cache growth algorithm to
match the needs of different application execution environments. By default
this mechanism is configured to favor simple file sharing which results in
very aggressive system cache growth. Pervasive.SQL implements a private
disk cache as well as utilizing the Windows file system cache, and so,
following Microsoft's guidelines, Pervasive.SQL configures this mechanism
to better accommodate network applications when installed on either NT 4.0
Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

The registry parameter that is modified is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management

Value: LargeSystemCache

By default, on Windows Server operating systems this value is set to 1.
Pervasive.SQL sets this value to 0 at install time. You must reboot your
server after installing for this setting to take effect.

More information on these mechanisms can be found on Microsoft's support
web site at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q232/2/71.ASP

  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installation Warnings

This release has been tested thoroughly and in a variety of configurations.

There are several Microsoft system DLLs that must be updated for
Pervasive.SQL 2000i to work correctly. If Install finds that these DLLs are
not the latest versions, it will update them and you MUST reboot before
continuing the install.

Also, please note the following in regards to installing this product:

General

   * You may encounter display problems when using the new HTML Help
     documentation. These problems are caused by specific Internet Explorer
     versions on your system. For information on how to solve this problem,
     please see the section "Internet Explorer and the HTML Help System"
     under "Documentation Notes".

Windows-specific

   * When installing to Windows NT 4, you must have at least Windows NT 4
     Service Pack 3 to install Pervasive.SQL 2000i. The use of Windows NT
     4, Service Pack 5 or higher is strongly recommended. Use of Windows NT
     4 Service Pack 4 is not recommended due to known defects in that
     release.
   * You must have Administrator rights in order to install Pervasive.SQL
     2000i. If you do not have at least Power User rights when installing
     to Windows 2000, you will receive an inaccurate error message stating
     that unInstallShield is in use.
   * Pervasive.SQL 2000i may not install or run correctly on older Windows
     95 systems. If you experience difficulties while installing to Windows
     95, ensure that you have the latest service packs from Microsoft
     installed. These Microsoft updates are not redistributable by
     Pervasive. You also need Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 or later for
     Windows 95 to function correctly with Pervasive.SQL 2000i. To
     determine if your Internet Explorer version is adequate, select Help |
     About Internet Explorer from a browser window and ensure that the
     version displayed is 4.72.3612.1713 or higher.

Terminal Server-specific

Pervasive.SQL 2000i is designed to operate seamlessly in a Terminal Server
deployment.

NetWare-specific

   * During NetWare installations, the creation of a DSN for DEMODATA will
     fail if TCP/IP is installed on the NetWare server but is not
     functioning correctly. Pervasive.SQL defaults to using TCP/IP if the
     installation detects that TCP/IP is installed, whether or not it is
     configured correctly. The same will be true of any subsequent attempts
     to create a database on the NetWare server. There are three ways to
     resolve this: 1) Ensure TCP/IP is working prior to installing
     Pervasive.SQL; 2) Uninstall TCP/IP from the server prior to installing
     Pervasive.SQL; 3) Change the protocol in use to SPX after installing.

Workgroup/Workstation Engines

Pervasive.SQL 2000i SP3 release is supported on the following platforms:

   * Windows XP
   * Windows 2000
   * Windows NT 4, SP5 and greater
   * Windows ME
   * Windows 98
   * Window 95B

Note: As a platform for either a server client or a workgroup/workstation
engine, Windows 95 is only supported if you are running Windows 95B with
all the latest service packs and you have installed Internet Explorer 4.0
or greater. Otherwise, you may encounter problems installing the product.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Documentation Notes

This section provides information regarding the documentation included with
the Pervasive.SQL 2000i product.

   * Like SP3, this release includes support for Microsoft HTML Help. The
     installation program determines whether your system can support the
     new HTML Help format. If so, your documentation is provided in HTML
     Help format (files with .CHM extension). If not, Winhelp documentation
     is installed (files with .HLP extension). On a server installation,
     both forms are installed so that clients without support for HTML Help
     can access the documentation on the server.
   * You cannot read online documentation on Windows 3.x until you install
     the 16-bit Acrobat reader. The Pervasive.SQL 2000i install does not do
     this for you. The 16-bit Acrobat Reader is located at <CD>:\acroread
     on the NetWare and Windows NT server CDs.

Internet Explorer and the HTML Help System

HTML Help uses parts of the Internet Explorer (IE) engine to display help
files. In the early versions of IE 5, Microsoft included a defect that
causes display problems with modular HTML Help systems. These problems can
be seen in PSQL2000.CHM, the master help file for Pervasive.SQL 2000i that
dynamically loads the other help files. Since this defect only affects the
file merging mechanism, you see no problems when loading individual help
files. Some specific symptoms you may encounter are:

   * The Contents/Index/Search/Favorites pane at the left side of the help
     window does not display correctly or is slow to repaint when you
     select a different tab such as Index or Search.
   * The body pane on the right side of the help window does not display
     correctly or at all.
   * The splash screen displayed when first loading the help window does
     not clear until you click on it.

If you encounter any of these problems, the solution is to upgrade to IE
5.01 or higher.

Configurations Where the IE Problem Occurs

You can experience this problem under the following conditions:

   * You have Windows NT 4, Windows 98, or Windows 95.
   * You have an Internet Explorer version listed in "Internet Explorer
     Versions that Cause Problems with HTML Help". A typical problem
     scenario is applying MS Office 2000 (which applies a defective IE 5
     version) onto a Windows NT 4 system.

You can determine your version by clicking Help | About Internet Explorer
from the browser window.

Internet Explorer Versions that Cause Problems with HTML Help

If your Internet Explorer version is one of the following, then you may
encounter problems with the main HTML Help file (PSQL2000.CHM).
   IE Version                           Description

 5.00.2014.0216 Internet Explorer 5 (First Production version)

 5.00.2314.1003 Internet Explorer 5 (shipped with Office 2000, also known
                as 5.0a)

 5.00.2614.3500 Internet Explorer 5 (shipped with Windows 98 Second
                Edition)

To resolve the problem, download version 5.01 or higher from Microsoft's
web site:

   * IE 5.01 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/ie501sp1.htm
   * IE 5.5 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/ie55sp1.htm

Internet Explorer Versions that work with HTML Help

If your Internet Explorer version is one of the following, or a later
version, then your HTML Help should function correctly.
   IE Version                   Description

 5.00.2919.6307 Internet Explorer 5.01

 5.00.3105.0106 Internet Explorer 5.01 with Service Pack 1

Windows 2000 and Windows ME shipped with IE 5.01 so you should not see the
problem on those platforms. Also, the problem should not occur with older
IE 4 versions.
