Gendex Supplemental Addendum Item: GXD98D29
Augmenting Troubleshooting Sections of DenOptix Digital Imaging System's
Service Manual & User Manual

Date: 98-April-29
Concern: Adaptec updates to SCSI/ASPI-related DenOptix init, scan & save problems
Origin: Gendex - Des Plaines
Keys: Win 95, PC, SCSI, Adaptec, ASPI Layer, compatibility, miniport, drivers

Note: This addendum item does NOT replace, nor precede troubleshooting bullets
found in either or both above mentioned manuals, nor any previously re-
leased items. It is possible that subsequent to the correct installation
of the DenOptix Digital Imaging System's scanner, SCSI card, supporting
hardware & software, and VixWin 2.x, subsequent to previously successful
scans, one of these three (3) critical support files may have been over-
written, corrupted, or misplaced by an unrelated installation, utility,
or procedure. This can occur on any system NOT completely dedicated, nor
secured for DenOptix Digital Imaging System. Use the following trouble-
shooting responses to help provide resolution. The files addressed here:

		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WNASPI32.DLL
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\APIX.VXD
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\AIC78XX.MPD
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\AHA154X.MPD
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\T358.MPD
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\SPARROW.MPD
		C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\FD16_700.MPD

The above pathnames assume Windows 95 installation went to C:\WINDOWS. If
not, please note your equivalent. Also, your system will use only one of
the above *.MPD miniport drivers, but it is recommended to copy them all.

 - IF THIS PROBLEM -
1. VIXWIN 2.X does not actuate an initialization of the DenOptix scanner within 8
seconds (a time delay which depends on any concurrent, competing applications)
after VixWin starts up. There is no trademark whirling sound. No middle light.
If you were to continue by clicking on menu item: File > DenOptix Scanner, you
would encounter a dialog window: "Unrecoverable Error 2104 - The SCSI driver
failed to initialize correctly..." . Clicking the Re-Initialize button results
in same. It's possible that you instead may encounter other SCSI-related error
codes here apart from "2104", but these you are certain are NOT resolved by a
thorough checking of your system's SCSI card seating, cabling, termination, or
any mentioned errant condition described in your troubleshooting guides within
the Adaptec SCSI kit, or DenOptix User &/or Service Manuals.

 - OR THIS PROBLEM -
2. VIXWIN 2.4 does initialize the DenOptix scanner routinely on startup, and the
SCAN button becomes available to you. Clicking SCAN results in SCAN activity,
but NO IMAGES are subsequently saved. The DenOptix/VixWin system appears to be
behaving normally except for the lack of saved images to your selected patient
and you encounter no error condition dialog. You are certain you have data on
   your exposed phosphor plate.

 - AND THIS RETRY -
3. Problem #1 or #2 still persists AFTER you perform a cold reboot of your PC and
an power ON-OFF-ON of the DenOptix scanner.

 - THEN PERFORM THE FOLLOWING -
A.
Files: AIC78XX.MPD, AHA154X.MPD, T358.MPD, SPARROW.MPD, FD16_700.MPD
Dates: 07/01/97 02/23/96 11/19/96 11/05/96 04/05/96
Sizes: 73,216 11,264 17,408 24,064 14,336
Do This: Place these files within subdirectory -> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\
via your preferred Windows File Manager, Explorer, or DOS command. There
is no easier method of installation than this direct placement. Most any
alternative involves error-prone device manager, Win95 CDROM, and .INFs.
You will be using only one of these drivers, but copying all is fine.

B.
File: ASPI32.EXE
Date: 03/23/98
Size: 297,155
Do This: Simply execute ASPI32.EXE (even from your floppy) to install and upgrade
the ASPI drivers. If your Win 95 ASPI Layer is up-to-date, this install
will inform you of such, else you will get a REBOOT instruction. Updates
         include files: WNASPI32.DLL, APIX.VXD, ASPIENUM.VXD, WINASPI.DLL, ASPI32
.SYS, and WOWPOST.EXE. Of concern are only the first two files. This up-
grade requires that either an Adaptec host adapter an Adaptec version of
the ASPI layer be installed on your system.

C.
Once you have performed the above steps, including the cold reboot and a
power ON-OFF-ON toggle of the DenOptix scanner, you may check your ASPI-
Layer updates using the following executable:
File: ASPICHK.EXE
Date: 03/23/98
Size: 115,200
Help: Click on ASPICHK.EXE (even from the floppy). This is a Windows95 utility
that detects and lists the current version of your Win95 ASPI Layer. The
files should all now read Version 4.57 (1008).

D.
Initiate a new VixWin/DenOptix scan to judge the success, or not, of the
         troubleshooting session.
